Bauhaus-inspired university campus in Nigeria designed as a social stage
A documentary titled Scenes from the most beautiful campus in Africa – a film about the Ife Campus commissioned for the Bauhaus centenary celebrates the Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria. A symbol of Nigeria's Independence from Britain in 1960, the modernist university was a product of politics, design and climate, yet its main priority was always its function as a social stage for education and community.

British and Scandinavian design meet in John Pardey’s easy rural modernism
In January of 2011 (W*142) we travelled from Wales to Norfolk, visiting the modernist houses of British architect John Pardey. Informed by the ultimate goal of designing a timeless building, Pardey’s work is deeply connected to landscape and offers a softer, modest style of modernism. It comes as no surprise that he was mentored by Jørn Utzon, and as a young architect he travelled to Australia to have lunch with Glenn Murcutt, whose maxim of ‘touching the earth lightly’ he followed.

Spanish residence Casa OS is a superb lesson in modernist architecture
Spanish architect Pablo Oriol founded Nolaster in 2005 with colleague Fernando Rodriguez. Working together since 2002, the firm racked up an impressive portfolio of collaborators including Fujikawa, Johnson & Associates and MVRDV. In 2008, Oriol and Rodriguez took the next career step by forming new practice FRPO, a ‘natural evolution of their personal experiences.’ Prior to this, in 2006 (W*96), Wallpaper* visited Nolaster’s Casa OS, a camouflaged modernist residence designed for Oriol’s parents.

We pay tribute to architect Ruy Ohtake (1938 – 2021)
Brazilian architect Ruy Ohtake, the master of Brazilian modernism, has passed away in São Paulo, at 83 years of age. To honour his memory, we revisit the Tomie Ohtake Residence, which he designed in 1968 for his parents and named after his mother, abstract painter Tomie Ohtake. Scroll down, to read this interview from the Wallpaper* archive, first published in 2001
