Särö Gavlar housing

OkiDoki Arkitekter

Architects Directory 2008

Okidoki Arkitekter is a young firm of enthusiasts, channelling a raft of interests into creating ‘contemporary architectural suggestions for timeless problems.’ Rickard Stark (35), together with Fredrik Hansson (27) and Ola Semeke (37) set up the studio in Gothenburg in 2005, combining their experience in everything from construction work to carpentry to give them an overview of architectural practice. Working on a variety of scales, ‘from furniture, interiors, housing and contract work to urban planning,’ they are looking to create work that plays a critical role. ‘Architecture can make a difference and not merely confirm conventional social norms,’ they say, ‘we make demands on ourselves to take social, environmental and historical aspects into consideration.’

Buildings

OKI DOKI - SWEDEN
Proposed holiday resort, Brazil
OkiDoki’s built work never forgets its social obligations, both to the environment and in the provision of affordable housing. The Särö Gavlar housing consists of eight dwellings contained within four buildings, a brace of generously-planned semi-detached houses that invert the traditional stubbornness of suburban design. Conceived as an enhancement of the standard pitched-roof structure, broad windows and terraces are notched into the roof pitches to let in masses of natural light. Façades are wood-clad and austere, reminiscent of traditional Swedish architecture. Proposed buildings for a compact holiday resort in Brazil are a bit more lavish, with four neat pavilions arranged around a sleek guest house to create a little beachside urban piazza, low-key and relaxed.
