Information
Arhitektibüroo Emil Urbel OÜ was founded in 1999. The three partners are Emil Urbel, 47, Indrek Erm, 40, Taso Mähar, 44. 'I approach architecture as a tool for creating the best environment for human life,' says Urbel. 'Architecture has the ability to affect human behaviour in different ways, and I’d like to help people feel safe and comfortable.'
Private Villa, Miiduranna
Inspiration
'I keep my mind open to everything,' says Urbel, who references both historical and contemporary architecture. The Tallinn scene is growing in international stature and Urbel and his team hope to travel more as a means of expanding their cultural horizons.
Innovation
The Villa in the Port of Miidurannas is generously-sized but austere - it won a local award for use of concrete. Constricted by the relatively basic building technology in Estonia, Urbel's architecture has to be pragmatic and straightforward. 'We don't use technologies and materials that are out of the clients and contractor's reach,' says Urbel. 'In the future we'd like to use more green technology, but this is considered too expensive in Estonia today.'
