The word ‘silence’ is more usually associated with a temple or a meditation retreat than with business premises. However, Afra and Alejandro Stöberl had that word in mind when they set out to design the new lablike store in Barrio Norte for VZ, an Argentine chain that specialises in cosmetic and spa products. The architects used only one colour (white), lots of lights and displays made of transilluminated plastic.
‘The walls were left as bare as possible so the products were in constant interaction with prospective customers,’ say the architects. ‘We did not need to use big graphic displays as the storefront is glazed, so passers-by can see what is happening inside and also be part of the scene. Light is nearly the only attention catcher, the rest is attained by the products themselves.’
