Following on from the success of Michelin-starred wd~50, which opened a decade ago this year, New York superchef Wylie Dufresne has opened a new outpost, the 56-seater East Village eatery Alder. The understated décor by local architect Jennifer Carpenter includes simple monotone furnishings, a ceiling made from salvaged fences and an accent wall of white brick. Food is gloriously iconoclastic, focusing on traditional dishes such as ‘pigs in a blanket’, but assembled with modern alternatives like Chinese sausage and Japanese mustard. And with such daring cocktails as the cheekily named ‘Love Oolong Time’ (tequila with five spice, grapefruit and oolong), Alder is sure to challenge and delight even the most seasoned foodies.
