Brooklyn-based Fort Standard debuts its new jewellery line

Known for their uncanny ability to put soul in simple, contemporary furniture, lighting and home accessories, Brooklyn-based design duo Gregory Buntain and Ian Collings at Fort Standard have ventured into new territory with their Cage jewellery line, which debuted at the American Design Club booth at the New York International Gift Fair.

Jewellery allowed us to explore the more sculptural side of design while still staying within our aesthetic,’ explained Buntain. The collection comprises six brass bracelets and ten necklaces, which eschew the duo’s customary precise line in favour of incorporating the look and feel of a handmade piece.

Inspired by the ability to manipulate common ’sprue’ wax, which is then cast into brass, the line’s soft, meandering curves subtly attest to each piece’s hand formed origins. This tension between the solidity of brass, fashioned into cage-like beads, and the malleability of form become even more heightened in the duo’s necklaces by the addition of a Japanese braided rope.

This is the first of many jewellery designs we’re likely to see from Fort Standard, hints Buntain and Collings, who express enjoyment working on such an intimate scale. In the meantime, the two are in constant conversation, coming up with new ideas that spring from previous projects or finding new challenges presented by opportunities they can’t turn down. The ultimate goal according to Buntain? ’We are going to take over the world.’ In the meantime, they’re more than welcome to occupy our homes and jewellery boxes.
