My Milan: Michael Young
It is design maverick Michael Young’s pioneering passion that keeps his designs spontaneous and him on the move. He first set up his studio in London in 1995, where he quickly became the darling of a new design generation with iconic designs such as the Tree coat rack for Swedese, the Stick Light for Eurolounge and the Yogi collection and Dog House for Magis.
However Young soon grew restless. There followed a stint in Iceland followed by moving the studio first to Brussels, later to Taipei, and finally in 2006 to Hong Kong.
Here, in China, the centre of global manufacturing, he sparked a new obsession for technology and industrial design. Pushing innovation to its very limits in a fresh approach that blends east and west, his latest designs, including the City Storm bicycle for Giant, MP3 player for Kuro Music and wireless speakers for Eops, are today all hugely successful, mass-produced objects.
It was this ability to mix state-of-the-art Asian technologies with western design values that first brought him to the attention of Trussardi. Inspired by the Italian fashion house’s extensive archives, Young lauches his debut ’100 collection’ for Trussardi Design at this year’s Salone.
