Design Awards 2008: the party
News
Work hard play hard so the saying goes. And given our annual Design Awards celebrated a year of the best work across the Wallpaper* disciplines, it was only fair we party hard to keep the balance intact.

More than 250 of the creative world’s finest folk made their way to the Old Sorting Office in central London to raise a glass to the best in design from the year just passed. And everyone agreed wallpaper’s fourth Design Awards in association with Jaguar were definitely the best.
Guests arrived at the venue, which had been transformed by event producers My Beautiful City into a spectacular exhibition space-cum-urban warehouse. Prints of all the winners were displayed on the walls together with a selection of winning products arranged on plinths for those wishing to take a closer look. Jaguar’s latest models the XKR and XF were also on show.
The host of invitees included a selection of nominees and winners of the 63 awards including Martino Gamper, John Pawson and Tamara Salman. The international judges were well represented by Patricia Urquiola and Langlands & Bell, who as well as Donatella Versace, we grilled about their judging experience.
We drank champagne and a choice of three concoctions from our best cocktail menu (see right) courtesy of Smirnoff and Tanqueray No 10 before taking our seats. Wallpaper* Editor-in-Chief Tony Chambers gave a welcoming speech then handed the mic to Wayne Burgess, Jaguar’s Principal Designer. Formalities over, we all tucked into an award-worthy feast: breast of Gressingham duck with wild mushroom, artichoke and truffle tarte fine followed by pear and prune clafoutis.
And of course it didn’t stop here. After coffee and delectable salt caramel truffles, the curtains were drawn, the lights went down and the party continued until dawn….
