Mondrian revamp, Los Angeles

Acclaimed designer Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz was commissioned by Morgans Hotel Group to rejuvenate this long-standing nightlife staple on Sunset, and has built upon Philippe Starck’s original design. “I didn’t want to eradicate Starck’s original vision, I wanted to build on it, to enhance it,” says Ortiz.

Enhancements include the gold-hued Penthouse and platinum tinged Apartment. Camelback headboards and sofas are crowned with black silhouettes, inspired by the surrounding mountains, and covered with white vinyl and woven fabric yarn.

Clusters of mini-chandeliers hang over black and white floral-patterned tables and ottomans, all reflected in the rotating box mirror which camouflages a flat screen. The open-air, bougainvillea-covered Sky Bar still looms over the pool and twinkling LA skyline but with a new, softer cream and olive lounge decor conceived by Tim Andreas of Banjo.
