Holy Handmade! Tony Chambers introduces our biggest ever May issue

Welcome to our biggest ever May issue: 344 pages of the best design from across the globe. As in previous years, our primary focus this month is Milan and our preview of the upcoming Salone del Mobile. Our highlights include Max Lamb’s showcase of sustainable design using a new miracle textile board, Jaime Hayon’s steel, stained glass and quartz Stone Age Folk pavilion and Michele De Lucchi’s retuning of Italy’s master woodworkers Bottega Ghianda.

Salone week is the time and place that Wallpaper* exhibits the now legendary Handmade project and this year our revelatory roll-out of fine craftsmanship, creativity and contemporary design has a new location – the Mediateca Santa Teresa. And this deconsecrated church on Brera’s Via della Moscova inspired 2017’s transcendent theme: Holy Handmade! A Temple of Divine Design. Dogma, deism, devotion. Cult, creed and communion; our pilgrimage to Salone del Mobile promises a truly elevating experience. A non-denominational shrine to design, Holy Handmade! leads a ritual celebration of divine inspiration, high craft and the sacred union of miraculous materials, the maker’s mark and the occasional infernal machine.

Mindful of mindfulness, the collective spiritual quest, the need for sanctuary in troubled times and the salve of quiet contemplation, we have tasked a host of design talent to reimagine ritual, rework worship and reconsider the communal. Visitors will be invited to confess behind Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec’s sacred veil, rest in pieces in Tom Dixon’s cardboard sarcophagus, store away their cassocks in Paul Helbers’ wardrobe, light a candle to Martin Brudnizki’s votive holder, drop a couple of Kostas Murkudis and Gustav van Treeck’s meditation tablets, partake of holy water from Conrad Shawcross’ blessed titanium vessel, enjoy an olfactory high with Bloc Studios and Haeckels’ incense and fragranced oil diffuser, follow Yves Béhar’s Ten Commandments and dip into Cutler and Gross and Doshi Levien’s Sunday worship clutch when Jamie Fobert’s offertory bag is passed round.

We look forward to welcoming you, our global congregation of followers, advocates and disciples, to Holy Handmade! And may your god/shaman/other spirit guide travel with you.
