PROFILE

With a principal office in Tel Aviv and a satellite in San Francisco, Axelrod Architects was established in 2000 by Irit Axelrod. Working with residential, institutional and commercial projects as well as interiors, the award-winning firm is committed to quality, accuracy and high-standard performance. ‘Our design approach emphasizes clean, simple forms, attentiveness to fine detailing, and honest expression of materials,’ says Axelrod. Cleaving closely to the evolution of design and product technologies, the team likes to work with innovative new materials and techniques. When asked what her main influences are, she replies, ‘Mies van der Rohe is the master pioneer of modern architecture, while Rem Koolhaas on the other hand is continually exploring. His design is intellectual and always interesting and unexpected.’

The Unfolding House

Keeping things simple, Axelrod designed the Unfolding House in Galicia as a clean cubic steel and glass structure. The interior is equally simple and flexible: the open plan has only one permanent partition and two sliding walls which divide the house’s 100sq m into a two-bedroom house. The combinations may look deceptively straightforward, but intricate layout skills are clearly evident. The structure’s steel skin is applied as a second layer over the main glass one, thus allowing for internal climate control. Additionally, depending on weather conditions, the external panels can be folded or unfolded in all directions, making the house easily adaptable and responsive to the owners’ needs.
