Welcome to our biggest ever May issue: 320 pages of the very best design from across the globe. We have a major focus on Milan with our preview of the upcoming Salone del Mobile (starting on p.147): an edit of the must-see exhibitions, presentations, product launches and spirit-lifting shenanigans from the greatest show on Earth. As usual, it’s an event to which Wallpaper* will be making a considerable contribution with our annual Handmade project – the marriage of fine craftsmanship and contemporary design featuring one-off pieces by artists, designers, makers and manufacturers. The showcase will be held once again in the Wallpaper* Arcade at via San Gregorio 43, and this year we have a special theme of travel and hospitality. So we invite you to check in to Hotel Wallpaper* as our very special guest.

We turned to some of the design world’s sharpest creative minds, calling on David Chipperfield, Alfredo Häberli, Bill Amberg, Carlo Brandelli, Beatrix Ong, David Rockwell and brands such as Artek, Cerruti, Hay and many more to conjure up the ultimate home away from home for the design-savvy traveller.

Visitors to Hotel Wallpaper* will be greeted by a dramatic aluminium installation by Jean Nouvel, before entering the most hospitable of spaces, where, tended to by staff in uniforms courtesy of David Kohn and Kinnasand, guests can bask in the glow of a light wall by BCXSY and Philips, pen a postcard home from Christian Liaigre and Hieronymus’ writing desk, rotate through Vladimir Kagan’s Ferris-wheel magazine rack, tee off on Jinsik Kim’s sculptural minigolf course, waltz under a chandelier by Robert Wilson with Slamp in the ballroom, open doors with Karl Zahn’s animal keys or freshen up for a night on the town at Vera & Kyte’s ironing station, before preparing for shutdown with sleek USB-charged toothbrushes designed by Industrial Facility. And finally, check out fully refreshed in body and mind, and pick up a few souvenirs of your stay from the gift shop, operated by WallpaperSTORE*.

So if you are in Milan from 12–16 April, do pay us a visit at Hotel Wallpaper* – it’s such a lovely place. And if you miss it, don’t worry, you can read all about it in our dedicated August issue.
