Fab 40: Haugen/Zohar, Norway

'There is no bad weather, only bad clothing' is a popular saying among people in Trondheim, Norway, and the latest project by Haugen/Zohar Arkitekter was apparently designed to support this local wisdom. The practice was invited by the city’s authorities to design a special outdoor area for one of the town’s kindergartens, helping to support year-round outdoor activities for children.

Architects Marit Justine Haugen and Dan Zohar suggested taking inspiration from old Norwegian turf huts, log cabins and the country’s storytelling tradition. The result is a 6x6 metre outdoor fireplace, built on a limited budget using recycled material to create 80 circles of varying radiuses, laid on top of each other to form a secretive, welcoming nook.
