Wallpaper* Handmade 2018 arrives in Singapore

Opening its doors at Singapore’s Gillman Barracks on 12 June, the Wallpaper* Handmade On Tour 2018 exhibition arrived in the city-state – the one and only stop after its Milan Design Week 2018 debut - on a mission: to guide its visitors on a long and luxurious journey towards a better self by way of innovative, contemporary design.

Part of an ongoing partnership between Wallpaper* and the DesignSingapore Council (Dsg), the exhibition is a distilled collection of 22 one-off collaborations – including seven by Singapore-based talent – fresh from Wallpaper’s Handmade 2018 show at Milan Design Week, the latest iteration of its ambitious annual project dedicated to the marriage of craftsmanship and design.

The show features a brand-new lighting project by Singapore-based designer Edmund Zhang and Italian manufacturer Slamp. Zhang, an industrial design graduate, was teamed with Slamp to create his Wobble Lantern, in the brand’s signature Lentiflex material, after winning Wallpaper* Handmade Next Generation Singapore Designer 2018 competition in partnership with Dsg.

‘The DesignSingapore Council is delighted to welcome Handmade On Tour for the second year. This is a rare chance for design lovers from Singapore and the region to appreciate these highly bespoke and well-crafted objects up close. As a UNESCO Creative City of Design, we are committed to developing a strong design ecosystem; this includes bringing the best designs to our shores to inspire our next-generation designers and also to raise the level of design appreciation in Singapore,’ says Mark Wee, Executive Director, DesignSingapore Council.

The exhibition follows a previous Singapore show by Wallpaper* with Dsg, held in March this year. ‘The Handmade Retreat’, a gorgeously rendered sanctuary of calm and barefoot luxury previewed the latest Handmade pieces by Singapore-based designers, which were seen alongside Handmade Classics from the Wallpaper* archive.

For the next stage of the partnership, emerging local designers were invited to become a part of the 2019 series of shows. Celebrating and nurturing Singapore’s dynamic and creative spirit, Wallpaper* Handmade Next Generation Singapore Designer 2019 competition was open to all qualified Singapore citizens and Singapore permanent residents – see more here.

The winning entry will make its debut at Singapore Design Week next March, before travelling to Milan Design Week in April, and finally returning to Singapore in June with a newly curated collection of ‘Handmade On Tour’ pieces.
