We appreciate that a bout of shopping works up an appetite and so are grateful for the level of care that Saks Fifth Avenue in Chicago has put into their new eaterie, Sophie’s. Named after Sophie Gimbel, an iconic fashion designer and proponent of American style at Saks for 40 years, the airy, new American restaurant makes the most of its environment - it sits on the new men’s store’s seventh floor and offers panoramic views of Michigan Avenue and the Magnificent Mile. Modern and luxurious, the space has been designed by architect Andre Kikoski (the man also responsible for the Guggenheim’s Wright restaurant in New York) in Saks’ signature black and white. Textured glass helps to delineate the bar, café, dining room and private dining areas, while other flowing forms and rich patterns, like geometric carpet and custom American walnut millwork and luminous cast glass bar, make reference to Gimbel’s distinctive aesthetic. Finished off with Ligne Rosset and Poltrona Frau furniture, as well as custom-designed pieces and Swarovski lighting fixtures, the spacious restaurant is an elegant place to enjoy craft cocktails and American favourites, whether you’ve bought anything or not.
