Art Basel Miami Beach
More than 200 of the world’s leading galleries will come under the spotlight at the 17th edition of the fair. The Nova sector promises to be a hotspot this year, with a focus on never-before-seen works fresh from artists’ studios. Highlights at the fair include Pace Gallery’s presentation dedicated to West Coast artists of the Light and Space and Finish Fetish movements, while Hauser & Wirth is bringing rare paintings and sculptures by Larry Bell to coincide with his first comprehensive US museum survey at the ICA Miami.

A short walk from Art Basel Miami Beach, there’s plenty of action to be found at Design Miami. Immersive environments are front and centre at the fair’s 14th edition: Friedman Benda will transform its booth into a Japanese rock garden; Galerie Patrick Sequin is presenting a Jean Prouvé prefabricated home from 1944 (pictured); and Kasmin is getting a monochrome makeover, highlighting works by Mattia Bonetti against a black and white backdrop.

Pantone has teamed up with independent hotel group Tribute Portfolio to create a first-of-its-kind pop-up pantry that will allow visitors to experience an immersive tribute to colour, launching at the Royal Palm South Beach Miami Resort. The installation will travel to Tribute’s properties in Savannah and Rotterdam next year, where each Pantone Pantry will be customised to reflect its host city, including collaborations with artists.
Nautilus, a Sixty Hotel
Led by cofounder and creative director Jason Pomeranc, this year’s programming for Nautilus, a Sixty Hotel includes temporary public art installations, exhibits and events throughout the week. Take a dip, quite literally, in Louise Bonnet’s The Cyclops (pictured), will be on display at the bottom of the pool, or get out of the sun under David Salle’s takeover of the awning above the Cabana Club. Vik Muniz, Suzy Kellems Dominik and Kenny Schachter will also be exhibiting at the hotel.

Contemporary art exhibition and auction Anónimo (Spanish for ‘anonymous’) moves to Faena Forum for its fifth edition, with proceeds directly supporting social and cultural causes. Anónimo is a platform for emerging talent from the Mexican and Latin American region and keeps the names of the artists behind the works under wraps until the sale on 5 December. The aim of the game is to create a new experience for collectors by eliminating knowledge of authorship and by extension bias, making them view pieces in an alternative light.

Those suffering an inevitable case of fair ennui will have to look no further than Prada’s debut members’ club, where select guests can retreat to the Freehand Miami hotel for a three-day programme of art, music, dining, conversations and late night festivities. The inaugural edition of Prada Mode features a site-specific intervention by artist Theaster Gates, as well as events organised by the National YoungArts Foundation and Document Journal. In advance of Art Basel Miami, Prada Mode members will receive credentials and special invitation for current and future current iterations of the club.

Tomás Saraceno has developed a new artwork Albedo, which will be unveiled on the oceanfront sandlot across from Collins Park. Audemars Piguet has helped bring the Berlin-based artist’s vision to life, which comprises 40-odd reflective, out-turned umbrellas arranged in a large-scale temporal pavilion. Viewed from above, the experimental sundial forms a striking geometric constellation, while solar energy is used to lift aerosolar sculptures into the sky. Albedo stems from the Wallpaper* Guest Editor’s long-term global investigation into achieving ‘an ethical collaboration with the atmosphere’ through fossil fuel-free movement. His research been exhibited globally, from Korea to the US and most recently, the Palais de Tokyo in Paris.
Pérez Art Museum Miami
PAMM is celebrating its 35th anniversary with a blockbuster lineup of events, exhibitions and programming during Miami Art Week. The museum’s curatorial staff have all chipped in for the headline exhibition, which traces over 2,500 works of art gifted to the museum over the years, among them pieces by Anish Kapoor, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella and Lorna Simspson. Other exhibitions include Christo’s documentary exhibition ‘Surrounded Islands’; Ebony G Patterson’s immersive ‘night garden’ installation; and José Carlos Martinat’s large-scale light sculptures that borrow motifs ranging from historical imagery to internet memes.

The Bass will showcase a trio of solo presentations, including Paola Pivi’s feather-covered polar bears; the Haas Brothers’ first solo museum exhibition; and new and recent work by Aaron Curry. Nikolai and Simon Haas’ ‘Ferngully’ will immerse visitors in a forest-like environment evocative of the 1992 animated children’s film from which the show takes its name, complete with a menagerie of their signature beasts. A series of fibre-optic palm tree lamps were produced especially for this exhibition, complete with woven trunks and copper fronds. Adding to the brothers’ signature fantastical feel, illuminated beadwork date pods hang from the branches, created from a logic-based beading system that borrows from biological processes.

The inaugural multidisciplinary festival from Faena Art is keyed towards Miami’s role as a port city that welcomes tourists, migrants and refugees from across the globe. An exploration of the US as a ‘place, concept and myth’, Alfredo Jaar’s monumental 1987 work A Logo for America serves as the festival’s departure point. His work will be displayed on an LED jumbatron mounted on a boat that will travel the entire coastline of Miami Beach each day throughout the festival. This Is Not America also features major new commissions by artists Derrick Adams and Tavares Strachan among others, spread throughout the Faena District in Miami Beach.

Choco Tower, a ten-foot high sculpture by Peter Anton comprising six colossal stacked chocolates made from painted aluminium, will be presented by Stuttgart-based Galerie von Braunbehrens at Art Miami. ‘Choco Tower is a continuation of my exploration of textures and use of vibrant colours that celebrate the importance and allure of food within people’s lives, both past and present,’ says the artist.
More than 50 works are set to go under the hammer and it’s all for a good cause. Artist Theaster Gates and starchitect David Adjaye have collaborated with musician and activist Bono to curate the third (RED) Auction to support the fight against AIDS. Sotheby’s will conduct a live auction on the evening of 5 December at the Moore Building in the Miami Design District, where the works are being displayed by Gagosian throughout the week. Keen collectors will have a chance to snap up big-ticket lots from the likes of Yinka Shonibare, Zaha Hadid, Marc Quinn, Sean Scully, Jony Ive and Marc Newson. Sotheby’s will also hold a complementary online auction, open for bidding from 12 November – 7 December.

Gagosian and Jeffery Deitch
Gagosian and Jeffrey Deitch have resurfaced in Miami’s Design District with ‘Pop Minimalism Minimalist Pop’, their fourth collaboration at the historic Moore Building. The exhibition explores the intersection of two major American art movements of the 1960s – pop art and minimalism – that both sprung as seemingly opposing artistic responses to abstract expressionism. The work here highlights points of common approaches, such as the mutual use of readymades in Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s soup cans and Dan Flavin’s fluorescent tubes.

Saint Laurent creative director Anthony Vaccarello is stepping into the curator’s seat at Miami Art Week, revealing Vanessa Beecroft as his next and second collaborator (after Daido Moriyama) in the label’s ongoing Self series exploring the brand’s identity. The Italian conceptual artist has created a photo wall for her installation in Miami’s Design District, capturing a troupe of models at the designer’s recent S/S19 show in Paris.
