Bird — London, UK
Forget burgers and hotdogs. The latest trend to hit the London foodie scene is a tarted-up version of that British high street staple: fried chicken. And if there's one place to get your fix, it's the bright new corner shop Bird. Located just north of Shoreditch in a spot that's still gritty enough to be cool, Bird is a collaboration between husband and wife team Paul Hemings and Cara Ceppetelli and creative director Paul Cohen, who enlisted designer Michael Marriott and local studio Brinkworth for the interiors. The result is cheeky, fun and crisp. Vivid, glossy reds, blues and greens offset the original raw concrete, brick and timber shell, while the distinctive logo has been branded onto the seats of traditional Windsor bow-back chairs. The menu, inspired by fried chicken restaurants across the pond, features fried chicken, yes, but it's made from a secret recipe with a British twist. It comes accompanied by various glazes and sauces. For the super hungry, we recommend the fried chicken and waffle - not to mention the salted caramel doughnuts for dessert, also available for takeaway from the restaurant's streetside doughnut hatch.
