CR Land Guanganmen Green Technology Showroom, Beijing
HISTORY
Hongyu Zhang and Gong Dong set up Vector Architects in 2008. Dong had project-managed Steven Holl's Linked Hybrid project in Beijing and worked for Richard Meier in New York; Zhang has a more business-focused background. Their first project was the Green Technology Showroom in Beijing, a long pavilion filled with sustainable technologies, its function and philosophy made clear by vertical grass walls.
APPROACH
The architects try to bring every variable into the equation, be it cultural, historic or climactic. 'Sustainability is not only about the completed building and its operation, but also a way of guiding the design and construction process,' says Dong. Their winning design for the Huaxu elementary school in Tianjin resulted from intensive study as to the best place for the school's social hub, research that informed the stacked linear layout of the finished project.
FUTURE
With the new Huaxu Elementary School on site in Tianjin, Vector's growing portfolio shows their commitment to 'efficient spatial solutions and clean and simple geometry.' They believe that architecture in China's architects are no longer concerned with 'Olympic hype' and are now focusing on the 'needs of society'.
