New designers

The 'talents' section is often where the most interesting things, hits and misses, are to be found. Young designers, particularly students, have a bit of an easier time. They’re able to experiment, push boundaries and respond a bit quicker to contemporary wants and needs than established designers.

Among the things that caught our eye in Cologne were some bold ideas about space and environment, though perhaps this was little more than a reaction against shoebox student accommodation. Experiments with materials (folded porcelain) and shapes (inverted bottle neck vases) and construction (balanced shelving) were just three of many examples that show German students are working hard to invent their own design language.
