Long-term Wallpaper* contributor Daniel Stier has a new photographic monograph on the shelves, created in close collaboration with London-based art directors YES Studio. Stier is a documentary photographer through and through, and his camera brings a layman's perspective to the highly specialised equipment and tests that shape the processes of scientific research.
Ways of Knowing combines Stier's long-running fascination with chronicling the world of science and academic investigation with his own artistic take on science-themed still lifes of 'imagined experiments'. Sites in the US and Europe form the first section of the book, while the second half is taken up with a series of elaborate constructions shot in Stier's own studio. The photographer describes these set-ups as 'complete fantasy', assembled from memory, imagination and curiosity in an attempt to replicate the fascinating world of complex science. Don't try this at home.
