Just a few blocks away from the building in Brooklyn where Heath Ledger was once happily shacked up with Michelle Williams, lives Caroll Taveras, a photographer whose work we’ve admired since we first spotted her at Hyeres in 2006.

Her painstaking collages are beautiful and intriguing, like fairytale illustrations that leave you wondering what has and is about to happen. Though there is a narrative to each work, it’s fluid and open to interpretation and often you read into them what you will. This might be why Taveras has produced a new book, Surrender. Showing her work in a book, rather than a gallery capitalises on one of our favourite qualities in her images - every time you revisit them, you see something different.
We caught up with Taveras to hear about the hows and whys of her work.
