Launching a new brand is a daunting business at the best of times, but even more so when debuting at the world's most anticipated annual design fair. Each year at the Salone del Mobile, the industry's most respected designers and brands compete for attention; so standing out from the crowd is no mean feat. Here we highlight six new names that were up to the challenge

While Italy's furniture companies don't typically dabble in fashion, the reverse - fashion designers dipping their toes into design - occurs with ever increasing frequency. There's no better stage for this activity than the Salone del Mobile, a six-day champagne-drenched, design extravaganza. On the one hand, there are brands like Giorgio Armani, Fendi, Versace, Kenzo, Missoni and Hermès, who show off a huge range of wares to press and buyers from their fully dedicated home lines. But the fair has also enticed fashion brands with no formal Casa departments to get in on the furniture action with spruced up store windows, one-off furniture designer collaborations and special events. The cross-pollination also filters down to the designers themselves: industrial design whiz Tom Dixon donned his fashion trousers this season with the full-scale collection he designed for Adidas, while Turkish fashion designer Dice Kayek put down his scissors and picked up a scalpel to create a marble sculpture. Here's a round up of the best fashion-meets-design activity of the week.

 Barmini, Washington DC, USA

The man behind the award-winning Minibar restaurant, molecular Spanish chef José Andrés is adding to his Washington DC empire with Barmini. Offering concoctions like the 'Salt Air Margarita' invented over 15 years ago, Andrés brings us his first ever chef-driven cocktail concept, reinventing classics and bringing forgotten techniques to capital city diners. Spanish architect and designer Juli Capella, along with Georgetown-based architecture and design firm CORE and Forrester Construction Company, have created an inviting space that marries hard and soft surfaces. Guests sit at white pod counters, looking onto shelves behind the bar filled with antique glassware (some dating back to the 1930's), vintage barware and classic cocktail books. Cerruti Baleri's cactus sofa and fruit pouffes add a pop of colour to the stark black and white interiors.

 #Bunk, Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul's only design-led hostel chain #Bunk recently opened its first property in the bohemian district of Beyoğlu. Comprising 32 beds arranged over 11 rooms, which include dormitories and a handful of small double rooms (some of which are ensuite), the hostel features stunning ceiling motifs based on mosque interiors, and marble bathrooms. Hang out in the café, or soak with new friends in the rooftop hot tub called the #bunkbath. Another, much larger #Bunk hostel with 170 beds, a pizzeria, bar and sundeck is due to open in June in Istanbul. The reasonable rates also include wifi and breakfast.

 Coya, London, UK

Continuing London's recent Peruvian invasion, the latest project by Arjun Waney (the man behind Zuma, La Petite Maison and The Arts Club) is private members bar and restaurant, Coya. Set within the grand confines of a classic Georgian building on Piccadilly, the space has been designed by London-based Richard Saunders of David D'Almada's company Sagrada, who has conjured a bohemian atmosphere with a modern spin. The eclectic interiors feature Peruvian antiques, painted murals and colourful textures. Food, by ex Ivy chef, Sanjay Dwivedi is a tasty array of Peruvian delights such as Conchas con ají limo (Scallops with limo chilli crumbs), while Lima's very best bars were scoured to create Coya's very own Pisco Sour served in traditional botija mud containers, traditionally used to store Pisco since the 1800s. The downstairs restaurant and pisco bar is open to everyone, but members will also have use of the separate dining area, outdoor terrace and bar.

 End...Link Beauty Salon, Osaka, Japan

Salons are popping up across Japan faster than you can say Konnichiwa. And the design community is as key to their inception as the grooming world. Osaka's newest beauty atelier, End...Link, showcases a minimalist architectural aesthetic with intriguing functional features. Owner Tomohiko Masuda wanted to create a space that could be modified to suit his staff's needs and enlisted the expertise of Japanese designers Yasunari Tsukada to do so. The designers chose to work with light wood and white for the interior to keep the narrow space feeling airy and uncluttered. The three-dimensional wooden lattice walls are a functional accomplishment, with glass panel inserts that can be rearrange to alter the layout of the shelves.

Wallpaper* has been big on the Bouroullecs since the designer duo’s earliest days in the industry. Their latest publication, Drawing, is an insight into the design process, a collection of hundreds of drawings, from conceptual scribbles through to more realised final sketches. Taken from notebooks and sketchpads over the past seven years, it has been lovingly compiled into nearly 900 pages by the designer Cornel Windlin and is available in English for the first time.
