Sonneveld House, Rotterdam
Architecture
At Wallpaper* rather than simply shooting our fashion stories on a model in front of a wind machine in a studio, we work hard to give the trend an appropriate context. In W*109 for our Domestic goddess shoot we chose Sonneveld House in Rotterdam as the perfect location to bring the story alive. and given the house itself is such an interesting case study of period architecture that we thought it worth taking a closer look.

The house is one of the best-preserved examples of pre-war Dutch functionalism. Designed in 1933 by Brinkman en van dern Vlugt, the firm responsible for the Van Neele factory and Feyenoord stadium, the villa has been carefully restored to its original state both inside and out. Using then modern techniques of steel framing and concrete the driving force behind the design was that each space and room should be constructed according to its intended use.
Sonneveld was the home of A. H. Sonneveld, a director of the Van Nelle factory and something of a pioneer in experimenting with modern industrial and social developments. Light, air and space were the key principles employed in considering the living situation of the inhabitants, alongside a series of technical domestic innovations such as a built-in radio and audio system throughout the house and a ten-head massage shower.
