'New Practices London' exhibition
Architecture
It's as much about young practices and fresh ideas as it is about established celebrity architects in the architecture world these days, and London's Architecture Foundation has always been consistant in supporting the young blood, and quick in putting ideas into practice.
Following their successful collaboration last year with MoMA, for the 2006 Venice SuperBlog project, the AF is crossing the Atlantic once more, this time to show young British architects' work beyond Europe. After teaming up with the AIA New York Chapter, the 'New Practices London' exhibition was launched late last week in the Big Apple, featuring work from six UK-based studios, all founded after 2000, but highly promising, having already won international competitions and critical media praise.
The exhibition's original concept sprang out from a conversation between the AF and the AIA New York Chapter's Centre for Architecture, during the Venice Architecture Biennale last year. Aiming to create a platform for discussion, to exchange ideas and experiences between the two metropolises, the show was more than warmly welcomed last week in New York, launching with a panel discussion between practices attended by over 200 people, followed by a lively opening party.

The exhibition, designed by Gage Clemenceau architects, includes three to four projects (built and un-built) from each studio, complemented by photographs, stunning renderings and models. A special book created by the architects, showing their work methods, philosophy and approach, as well as six short films sublimely documenting everyday life and work in each studio, provide an extensive insight into the world of these young British practices. For those who can't wait to get a taste of the show, further images of all the practices' works can be seen in our exclusive gallery.
In addition to their actual projects and way of working, the architects also show an item brought from London especially for the exhibition, underlining their connection to the city. Among the exhibits was an client-artists' metallic ball, a painting made by mud from the Thames, an antique Victorian glass object, photographs from Richard Wentworth's ongoing work, a Japanese guide book for London, and Francis Alys artwork. The items offer a special twist to the exhibition, which encompasses in the best way the bright young talents' work, preparing the ground for further architectural exchange, extending an open invitation for more similar collaborations in the future.
The show will be followed up during the AF's Winter Night Talks series, where emerging NY practices will be invited to introduce their work to the UK.
