Just over a year after it opened with 52 rooms, the Sala Samui Chaweng Beach Resort has topped off its second phase with the 82-room Garden Wing.
Both wings were conceived by Thai studio Onion to reflect the shifting phases of the moon, a conceit seen to best effect in the hotel’s central façade, which is comprised of semi-circular brise-soleils.
The first Beach Wing channels the energy of the full moon through the circular silhouettes of the light fixtures, outdoor bathtubs, a capacious circular pool and arches, whilst the sophomore complex takes on a mood-board informed by the half and dark moons.
Thankfully, the Garden Wing’s design tropes are not literal, Onion leaning, instead, towards white washed walls, thick crescent walls, pastel hued bed linen, cool blue-grey stone tiles, and summery polygonal-tiled pools for the bedrooms, and layering the public reception areas with darker shades.
Guests of the Garden Wing who are averse to the idea of schlepping to the facilities at the Beach Wing can stay put with their own cluster of distractions, not least a 25m swimming pool, spa and steam room, and an airy blue and white themed Treehouse restaurant and bar that serves up western and Thai standards.
