Modernism to mysticism: Balkrishna Doshi’s works of architecture
Pritzker Prize winning architect Balkrishna Doshi has a career that spans 60 years, so a little evolution is to be expected. But tracing its arc, having begun his career a fervent modernist – trained at Le Corbusier’s atelier in Paris – halfway through his life it seems Doshi abruptly traded the rational for the fairy tale, the international for the local, and became, in effect, a completely different architect. Here we show his architectural and artistic development from modernism to mysticism.

Made by hand: Jacob Brillhart dissects the early travel sketches of Le Corbusier
From buildings to urban planning to furniture, there may not be a more influential figure in modern architecture and design than Le Corbusier. Yet the man born Charles-Édouard Jeanneret in Switzerland in 1887 never attended university and had no formal architectural training. What he did have, however, was a voracious mind, and mentors who encouraged him during his teens and early 20s to travel around Europe and Turkey and draw draw draw.

Walter Maria Förderer’s 1960s European churches remain avant-garde today
In the 1960s, Walter Maria Förderer designed eight churches in Switzerland and Germany. Influenced by Le Corbusier, and even more so by the collages of Kurt Schwitters and Gothic architecture, Förderer designed cascades of concrete blocks and strange totemic objects that now form some of Europe’s most avant-garde religious buildings.
