Tierra Garat: the new cafe making Mexico wake up and smell the coffee

Over the past decade there has been a considerable rise of the prominence and popularity of coffeehouses, leaving high streets brimming with corporate coffee shop chains. Breaking the mould in Mexico City is the Esrawe + Cadena-designed Tierra Garat.

Located in the hip neighbourhood of Colonia Roma in the Mexican capital, Tierra Garat is the first outpost of its kind by gourmet coffee brand Café Garat. Aiming to create a space that was, and felt, fundamentally and authentically Mexican, the brand turned to Héctor Esrawe’s studio and Cadena y Asociados to design the space.

The brief was simple: to transport customers ‘back to the roots of the earth, disclosing the untold story of Mexican coffee’.

The resulting interior did just that, marrying up Café Garat’s commitment to quality - they are known for sourcing their grains from the best regions of Mexico - with Esrawe + Cadena’s inventive aesthetic. A beautifully detailed interiors evokes warmth and authenticity. Notably characterised by its materiality, the textures of the interior have been taken from embroidered leather, embossed hide, knits and the earth.

Mirroring the straight-forward and simple space, the menu offers a soothing selection of chocolate and coffee in store.

This new coffeehouse’s intention are elegantly symbolised from the very first glimpse of its facade – where a modern and bright logo makes its mark on the history and character of its host.
