and rising stars with the most outstanding makers and manufacturers. Here, journey down memory lane and recall the one-off
wonders that make up the past decade of craft and collaboration
Handmade X: With Love
A decade on, emotions are running high. So overwhelmingly warm and fuzzy-feeling are we that the anniversary edition is a celebration of love in its infinite variety. Highlights from this year’s
event include Elmgreen & Dragset and Georg Jensen’s cellphone slumber pod and Chan + Eayrs, Sebastian Cox and American Hardwood Export Council’s blushing bar, while Jaime Hayon and Caran d’Ache have parented little pastel people and Paul Smith and Mercian designed a bicycle made for two
This year, we tasked designers and makers with thinking about the rest, repair and elevation of mind and body. It was an idea we tagged ‘Wellness + Wonder’. This was no woolly bandwagon-boarding. There was serious intent behind that idea, important questions asked: What can and should we mean now by ‘functionality’? How much can we really expect design and designers to do?
Every Handmade is a celebration of intelligent design, the full potential of the immortal hand and eye. In 2017, though, our ambitions were truly transcendent. We charged designers and makers with tapping the long history of devotional fixtures and fittings, symbolic gateways to the godhead, or at least places that might encourage inner calm and communion. Welcome to our temple of divine design...
Our annual salute to creativity and craftsmanship came over thoroughly hospitable in 2016. We invited guests to leave troubles at the door and check in to Hotel Wallpaper*. The greatest minds in design and manufacturing formulated, fussed and fused to ensure your stay was beaming and bedazzling in equal measure. There is drama, from Jean Nouvel’s what-a-welcome aluminium installation piece to Wonmin Park’s monumental marble reception desk
Handmade 2015: Eat me! Drink me! Tell me that you love me!
In the Wallpaper* Arcade, our veritable feast of design excellence focused on food, drinks and entertaining – coined Eat me! Drink me! Tell me that you love me! Explore the fruits of our symphony of treats, from Konstantin Grcic’s mobile kitchen and grill to breakfast in bed with Muller Van Severen
To celebrate five fabulous years of Handmade, we commissioned a quintet of hand-printed high fives from some of the finest designers who have contributed over those years, Naoto Fukasawa, Konstantin Grcic, Amanda Levete, Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby and Paul Smith, who made their mark on our five limited edition covers
For our fourth year, we headed to an exciting new location, and the results of our lab included Ron Gilad’s surreal room dividers, felt lamps by Snarkitecture and Simon Heijdens’ fibre-twitching, wind responsive curtain
In 2012, remarkable works – a dog retreat, bespoke suiting and a games table among them – were created by visionary collaborators including Comme des Garçons, Architectural Titanium, Alfredo Häberli, Industrial Facility, Charlotte Talbot, Brioni and many more
For our second outing, the Handmade franchise evolved into a global showcase of contemporary design craftsmanship. Highlights included Hannah Martin’s letter openers, a decanter set by Yuri Masnyj and Baccarat and a bar by Sou Fujimoto, AHEC and Imora Legno
This was the year we set ourselves the task of commissioning over 100 products. Acting as client, patron and creative director, we brought together and briefed some of the world’s leading designers, craftsmen and manufacturers. They then went away and came back with furniture, fittings, foodstuffs, fashion and more, all which were presented at the beautiful Brioni space in Milan
