High wire act: the fairtrade eyewear brand matching ethics to aesthetics
Wires is a new fairtrade eyewear brand conceived by designer Yair Neumann and model Lily Cole. The range, which is handmade in the UK and Zimbabwe, aims at bringing work to local craftsmen in Harare. ‘In the past few years, extreme weather in Zimbabwe has badly affected agriculture and increasing numbers of people are in need of an income that doesn’t rely on field labour,’ explains Neumann. Frames are crafted by hand from enamel-coated copper wire using an African technique that dates back to the 16th century. The ‘friendly’ frames are also slightly malleable, allowing them to be tweaked to perfectly fit any face.
