Escentric Molecules opens its first-ever boutique in Berlin’s Mitte neighbourhood
The cult fragrance house marks its 20th anniversary with a permanent home that transforms a former gallery into an effortless choreography of fragrance, art, movement and music
In Partnership With Escentric Molecules
Fragrance is invisible by nature, but at Escentric Molecules’ new Berlin store, the brand’s 21 scents are given space to breathe. Sound, movement and controlled lighting collide in the independent fragrance house’s first permanent home that opened on 8 September 2026 at Auguststraße 62 in Mitte, ahead of Berlin Art Week. Occupying a former art gallery on one of the city’s most culturally active streets, the boutique has been conceived as something more than a place to buy perfume: it is a three-dimensional expression of the Escentric Molecules world.
The setting feels particularly apt. Berlin has long been embedded in the brand’s creative DNA: co-founder and perfumer Geza Schoen is based in the city, where he has his fragrance laboratory (the brand itself was founded in 2006 in London, where Geza was then based, with creative director Paul White). Here, the pair’s fascination with the intersections between fragrance, music and visual culture is translated into architecture, with the restrained pulse of German techno among the references informing the boutique’s sound and visual programming.

Minimalist walls, anodised aluminium and controlled lighting give the space the character of a gallery rather than a conventional retail outlet. Fragrances sit individually on aluminium podiums, that are programmed to move in choreographed sequences. Above these sit ‘drawers’ that can be pulled out one by one to reveal the full collections associated with each scent.
The boutique changes character as the day progresses, too: during opening hours it centres on fragrance discovery; after dark, products retreat and the space becomes a glowing gallery for moving image and digital art. An evolving programme of work by artists and filmmakers is intended to give the address an ongoing cultural life. ‘We envisioned a gallery-like space, a place where fragrances could be experienced rather than simply displayed,’ says architect Sophie Schoen-Berianidze, who worked closely with White during the project’s initial stages. The result, she adds, invites visitors to engage with scent ‘in a more immersive and meaningful way’.

That approach feels consistent with a brand that has spent two decades questioning what a fragrance needs to be. Escentric Molecules first made its name by putting aroma-molecules themselves at the centre of perfumery, creating scents that are inherently genderless and designed to be worn by anyone. Its founding pair of scents, Molecule 01 and Escentric 01, both revolve around Iso E Super, the synthetic aroma-molecule created at IFF in 1973 that Schoen began exploring in isolation and at unusually high concentrations. Molecule 01 reduces the proposition to its most elemental form – Iso E Super alone – while Escentric 01 uses the molecule at 65 per cent alongside a precise supporting composition.
Twenty years on, those scents remain at the heart of the house. Molecule 01 is designed less as a conventional perfume than a close, elusive presence, appearing and disappearing on the skin. Composed solely of Iso E Super, it interacts differently with each wearer, creating an effect that feels uniquely personal – and, according to the lore that has grown around it, strangely magnetic, with stories of strangers stopping wearers, even chasing them down the street, to ask what scent they are wearing. Escentric 01 expands on the same molecule with 18 supporting notes, including lime peel, pink pepper, jasmine bud and orris, before settling into balsamic notes and clean musk.

Together, they encapsulate the duality on which the wider collection is built: the radically minimalist Molecule fragrances isolate individual aroma-molecules, while their Escentric counterparts use supporting ingredients to illuminate each molecule’s particular character. Molecule + takes the idea in another direction, pairing Molecule 01’s Iso E Super with a single natural note, from iris and mandarin to black tea and ginger, while the recently launched Cologne One marks the house’s first exploration of the cologne format.
The boutique arrives, fittingly, as Escentric Molecules celebrates its 20th anniversary. For a house whose fragrances have always emphasised individuality over categorisation, a permanent physical space offers another way of expressing that philosophy – not by fixing it in place, but by allowing scent to interact with architecture, light, sound and the people moving through it.

‘Berlin has always been a part of our DNA,’ says White. ‘Creating a permanent home here allows us to deepen our connection with our community.’ Two decades after Escentric Molecules stripped perfume back to the molecule, its first boutique expands the idea outwards again. Scent remains at the centre, but now there is an entire space around it – one designed to be seen, heard and felt.
