As if by magic: L’Objet launches ’Smoke and Mirrors’ at Maison et Objet
Always stealing the limelight with opulent collections, decorative homeware brand L’Objet has veered in a whimsical direction for its latest collection. Launched at Maison et Objet this weekend, the brand has taken its graceful lavishness into a world of magic and games.
Taking pride in globe-trotting artisanal craft, the collection comprises handcrafted and deeply luxurious textiles, porcelain and gold wares. Titled ‘Smoke and Mirrors’, the range explores the mystery of traditional parlour games with a mix of pieces including leather tic tac toe tokens, ebonised mahogany dominoes with fine brass detailing and crocodile playing card holders.
The collection evokes a light-hearted Mad Hatter’s tea party feel via the use of symbols and playing cards alongside white sculptural rabbits. ‘Humankind has long been fascinated by the capricious hand of fate, the allure of magic and the drama of risk-taking’ explains Elad Yifrach, founder and creative director of L’Objet.
The brand still retains its reputation for decadent materials in amongst the fantastical concepts – the rabbits are made from specially sourced French Limoges porcelain and embellished with 24k-gold-lined ears. Additional ornaments include antique brass trinket boxes, geometrically printed serving trays that theemselves appear as board games and beaming gold-framed clocks.
And when are we to use these fantastical pieces? ‘Their function is to serve as an entertaining end to an elegant dinner party or a wonderful pastime for the whole family,’ says Yifrach. A niftier alternative to Monopoly at the end of a banquet, we’d say.
