Comme des Garcons
Of her collection for Comme des Garcons, Rei Kawakubo spoke of the value of bad taste; according to her it's better than no taste at all. Bad girl rocker Amy Winehouse, performing a few days later at the Fendi party, gave the assembled fashionistas a very similar sentiment: 'I don't know anything about fashion, but the only taste to have is bad taste'. Funnily enough Kawakubo had selected Winehouse along with Marilyn Monroe for the soundtrack to her show. The collection in bubblegum pink, Valentine's Day red, black and white was extraordinary to say the least. Clouds of red or pink tulle, coats that had multiple cutouts in the shape of smiling lips trimmed in ruched tape, and tailoring, in jackets, that was barely there - often just sleeves, or a yoke, facings, collars and buttons. The remainder was entirely constructed with shiny elasticated ribbons, resembling garter belts, criss-crossing the body like harnesses.
