The beauty of Edmund Sumner's architectural photography is in its capacity to transform static brick, concrete and wooden subjects into rich, almost dynamic entities. Outside the Box, a new exhibition at the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation in London, showcases a selection of Sumner's work compiled over the last five years in Japan.

The architecture is contemporary, ranging from distinctly Japanese to generically urban. In their focus the photographs uncover a fascinating geometry - from the curved table reflection which seems to magically complete the circle of a library window, to the criss-crossing electric wires against a nebulous grey façade. The work captures a kind of natural, fleeting whimsy easily overlooked amidst the commotion of daily life.
