With the world's focus turning to Brazil ahead of the World Cup and Olympics, Frankfurt Book Fair has taken the opportunity to pay homage to the country. To mark the occasion of Brazil as the guest country of honour, they've invited nine young architectural practices from the Latin American country to present their work at the city's Deutsches Architekturmuseum.
'Nove Novos - Neun Neue: Emerging Architects from Brazil' focuses on the work of Arquitetos Associados, BCMF, Rizoma, Jacobsen, Carla Juaçaba, Corsi Hirano, Metro, Studio Paralelo and Nitsche - selected from centres like Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo but also from locations as far flung as Belo Horizonte and Porto Alegre.
Their portfolios incorporate private residences and administrative buildings, sports venues, commercial buildings and museums, but the wealth of private commissions has the economic upturn to thank. After the death of Oscar Niemeyer last year, a new generation of architects are now shaping the architectural landscape of their country. Most of the participants in 'Nove Novos - Neun Neue' are under 40 years old.
A special section of the exhibition is devoted to the extensive private art collection and botanical gardens of Inhotim's Instituto de Arte Contemporânea e Jardim Botânico, located in Minas Gerais, in southeastern Brazil. Many of the Institute's pavilions were designed by some of Brazil's up-and-coming architects, including some of the show's contributors.
The event will run until early 2014, in conjunction with the Instituto Tomie Ohtake in São Paulo. A symposium on 19 September marks the opening, with all nine studios in attendance to present their works.
