Bad Lab Beer Co — Somersworth, USA
From the start, the owners of this New Hampshire bolthole, Bad Lab Beer Co, were clear that they wanted to steer clear of the expected design tropes commonly associated with American brew pubs.
For Studio Richard Lindvall, it certainly helped the cause that the space in question – the ground floor of an industrial building located an hour north of Boston – was lined with high ceilings and expansive windows that flood the space with light even in the depths of New Hampshire’s snowy winters.
It was a blank canvas that allowed the Stockholm-based studio to quietly insert a stylishly monochromatic palette of black steel accents, tables topped with light grey Valchromat, slender Roll & Hill tube lamps that echo the exposed ceiling pipes, slender wired bar stools from Massproduction and stainless steel cabinets of the open kitchen. Adjoining the sturdily rugged beer-tasting concrete counter, meanwhile, are a row of brewing tanks hived off behind a glass wall.
In perfect simpatico, chef Jeremy Gearty and brewer Brett Lister pair a casually rustic menu of charcuterie and kimchi chicken sandwiches spiced with miso mayo, with 16 draft lines of beer brewed on-site, alongside malty American IPA-styled beers and Belgian white ale perfumed with clove and fruit notes.
