Puro Hotel — Mallorca, Spain
Palma’s Puro Hotel is revamped

An icon is reborn. Following an extensive refurbishment by OHLAB, Palma de Mallorca’s Puro Hotel has introduced 22 remodelled rooms, each upgraded with a contemporary sheen. An irregular configuration, thanks to a mixture of existing buildings, including the 18th century palace that frames a majority of the hotel, has led OHLAB to take a puzzle-like approach to the revamp. With each space presenting its own unique layout and quirks, the result is a series of rooms that are, while uniform in decor, completely bespoke and tailored to their own configurations.
The earthy aesthetic is the sum of natural materials such as oak wood, raffia and wicker, alongside leather, linen, cotton, and bespoke fabric designed by OHLAB and produced on local looms. Elsewhere, pure and simple lines appear in the form of hemp rope, which provides a creative alternative to balustrades in the duplex Junior Suites. In the bathrooms, organically sculpted, stark white freestanding tubs bridge the gap between the hotel’s cool, lounge atmosphere and its rustic edges; a juxtaposition no more obvious than in the contrast of the same rooms’ smooth concrete walls and rough stone ceilings.
Beyond the guest rooms, the bohemian vibe that has come to be synonymous with Palma is not hard to find. A rooftop terrace featuring a small pool surrounded by Balinese beds reminds guests of exactly where they are, while those seeking a slightly more upbeat tempo will find it at OPIO, the hotel’s clubby DJ-hosted bar. A well-equipped spa — complete with a sauna and Turkish bath — will no doubt take the edge off the next morning.
