New York Design Week 2018 preview
Although following hot on the heels of Salone del Mobile on the design calendar, NYCxDesign (11–23 May) has stayed the course to become a vibrant, inspiring showcase of American design and creativity. This year’s iteration is set to be especially dynamic with a slew of independent designers and collectives debuting new wares on their own terms and turf. Even the behemoth International Contemporary Furniture Fair, the week’s original anchor, has shaken things up this year. Here are some of the highlights in store for the week. Writer: Pei-ru Keh
For its latest showcase of American design, the cooperative showspace Colony tasked 17 creatives to tackle the notion of balance. Curated by founder Jean Lin, ‘Balance/Unbalanced’ will feature work from designers such as Moving Mountains, M. Callahan Studio, Vonnegut/Kraft, Hiroko Takeda and Farrah Sit, just to name a few. The resulting pieces range from furniture, textiles, objects and lighting to spatial, experiential and acoustic design, and promises to uphold the space’s values of bringing refinement together with progressive design in harmony.
