Our September Style Issue sees our usual Newspaper section reinvented as ‘In Fashion’, an edit of 11 stars of the A/W 2022 collections, photographed by Matthieu Lavanchy. From a fuzzy wide-brimmed hat inspired by a Dutch Old Master painting to a fluffy tie-dyed shearling bag, from a sequinned dress recalling a kiwi fruit to a hooded sweater and all-in-one combo (our newsstand cover star), each item embodies the game-changing exuberance of the fashion industry.
Our limited-edition cover by Ben Kelly conveys a similar spirit: an acrylic-on-canvas artwork featuring the hazard stripes and International Orange that have been his signature since he designed the interiors of the legendary Haçienda nightclub in Manchester four decades ago. One of the most influential shapers of 1980s British music culture, Kelly has stayed on the cutting edge, as evidenced in his work with Virgil Abloh, a mesmerising installation at London’s 180 The Strand this summer, and an ambitious collaboration with OMA for next year’s Manchester International Festival – so this feels like an apt moment to salute his fruitful career.
A first-time Wallpaper* contributor, photographer Eva Wang likewise looks to the 1980s for our womenswear fashion shoot, all sharp silhouettes, striking eye make-up and strong poses, while longstanding collaborator George Harvey has shot our menswear story, a futuristic celebration of bold shoulders, cinched waists and the double-breasted blazer.
Complementing these studio shoots is an eight-page celebration of the house of Alaïa as seen through the lens of photographer Spela Kasal. Wallpaper* rarely covers couture, but the sensitive modernisation of the house of Alaïa under creative director Pieter Mulier merits an exception: as he tells our fashion features editor Jack Moss, Alaïa is ‘beauty, body, sex [...] it’s sex that comes from the heart, from the inside, where beauty belongs and can be found’. A special thank you to our indefatigable fashion director Jason Hughes, who masterminded this Style Issue, as well as personally styling all of these shoots.
Elsewhere, we speak to Raf Simons about his Shaker-inspired accessories collection for Kvadrat; visit the north London studio of sculptor Rana Begum, whose dynamic explorations of light, colour and space have fuelled collaborations with the likes of fashion designer Roksanda Ilinčić and architect Marina Tabassum; and witness the creative process of Loewe Craft Prize 2022 finalist Fredrik Nielsen, who is bringing a bold conceptual bent to glass art.
Rounding off The Style Issue is an Artist’s Palate contribution from Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana – pasta alla Norma, as vibrant and quintessentially Italian as the Dolce & Gabbana Casa tableware on which it’s presented. Bon appetit!
