’Inside Design with Bill Amberg’ at Great Western Studios, London

With craft returning to the forefront of British design, it makes sense that craftsmen would be the industry’s new rock stars, the skilled hands behind our most exciting creations.

As interest in his work soars, the Bill Amberg Studio, one of the country’s most established and celebrated craft collectives, has unveiled five new leatherwork pieces designed to bring the country’s crafting fans into his world. They and other objects are the focus of ’Inside Design with Bill Amberg’, the first in a new series of exhibitions to be held at Great Western Studios, the West London creative co-op.

Amberg’s products appear to have little in common besides their deft leather applications; a fine-looking road bike co-created with British maker Charge has a customised leather pan saddle and mud flaps and a floor is laid in leather herringbone parquet. Yet they each offer insight into his creative process and the development of a product from sketch to sale.

A wall-mounted shelf, built using the same techniques Amberg used to develop the reception desk at London’s Shard skyscraper, tells a design story through materials, tools and the objects displayed on the leather-panelled surface.

Amberg will discuss these and other stories with design gallerist Libby Sellers at a special evening event at Great Western Studios on 28 February. In conversation, the two will map the success of Amberg’s most iconic designs - his leather-panelled doors, his voluptuous chairs, his dream bags - while also examining the importance of craft in the development of a design.
