Hosted by the German Design Council each year and elegantly curated in a grey corner of Hall 3 at the fair, the d3 contest selects work from budding designers, no more than three years out of college. With entries from around the world, it’s a microcosm of what Salone might look like in a few years’ time.

If this is the case we can look forward to a mixture of very elegant, simple but exquisitely crafted design and, at the other end of the spectrum, some ingeniously playful, statement furniture. The winner, Dutch designer Pepe Heykoop, successfully married both aspects, with a simple chair design that functions as a normal chair, but, when pushed or tilted, bends and flexes in all manner of ways thanks to reinforced rubber joints.
