There's nothing wrong with straightforward and pared down, but sometimes even we crave something hair-raising, body binding and out-of-the-ordinary. Needless to say therefore, that the faceless face of avant-garde style, Martin Margiela, always comes top of our sartorial hit list.

Consequently, Maison Margiela’s launch into interiors with the installation - Mat, Satiné, Brilliant - at this year's Salone was top on our list to visit.

Recreating the Maison’s Parisian atelier in a 180 square metre space on via Savona – Margiela has created a topsy-turvy world of subtle interior intrigue and jarring aesthetic paradox.

With trompe-l’oeil diversions at every turn, including oversized painted images of the headquarters; Margiela’s approach is not for those of a pedestrian disposition. Disembodied mannequin limbs litter the space and office commodities including phones and typewriters come covered in a layer of white fabric.

Recycling past elements of the Margiela narrative, the elusive designer has included a champagne glass pyramid from the LA store and a model of a birthday cake from the 20th anniversary show in his Zona Tortona installation.

With an array of effortlessly effective bottle lamps, a collection of customised Russian dolls and a coffee table made from magazines - Mat, Satiné, Brilliant offered a tantalising opener to Margiela’s range of interiors and design service.
