‘Christian Dior considered the rose to be the queen of all flowers and it is an important identity of the house,’ says artistic director of Dior Joaillerie Victoire de Castellane. It is a motif that takes centre stage in the new fine jewellery collection La Rose Dior, which translates the flower’s sensual silhouette into the Bois de Rose, Rose Dior Bagatelle and Rose Dior Couture lines. Pieces including single earrings, open bangles and minimalist necklaces play on the rose’s voluptuous curves for chic and sensual jewellery.
‘It is very important for me not to tire of the themes, and I like to play with the different styles of the rose,’ says de Castellane of the jewellery, which coils the rose’s undulating stem into bracelets and traces its unfurled petals in diamond rings.
‘The Rose Dior Couture line features a rosebud in full bloom. It's stylised like a child’s drawing and inspired by the roses that dotted Christian Dior’s couture looks. Rose Dior Couture is the baby of all existing rose collections and completes the universe dedicated to the rose. Also, the rings are enhanced by a shank with thorns echoing the Bois de Rose aesthetic, suggesting many possibilities of mix and match between the collections.’
The rose has long been a significant symbol for Dior, nodding back to a young Christian Dior’s love of pruning roses with his mother, Madeleine, in the garden of his childhood home in Granville, Normandy. Since then, it has been embroidered and brocaded onto dresses, coats and belts, or painted onto chiffon in an haute couture tribute. Now, it is brought to life in gold and diamonds for jewellery that celebrates this most romantic of motifs. The fluid pieces, juxtaposing graphic forms, are embellished with a sprinkling of white diamonds only – ‘like dewdrops on the petals’, de Castellane adds.
