Designer Ron Arad discusses the creation of some of his most iconic designs, which are going up for auction at Sotheby’s

Sotheby’s auction ‘Living in a Material World’ opens next week, showcasing the evolution of design with a collection curated by Tony Chambers. Ron Arad features in the show, and is offering up a whole seven lots.

In this video, the London-based designer takes a trip down memory lane, revealing the making of some of his signature pieces. ‘All materials are good, there are no bad materials, just depends how you use them,’ he muses. From his striking aluminium ‘All Light Long’ table, through to his cherry wood and stainless steel ‘Box in Four Movements’, he discusses how his materials have often inspired the forms themselves.

‘The most frequently asked question is what is more important, function or aesthetics,’ Arad explains, and his answer – ‘they're good friends, they don't fight each other, they enhance each other.’

‘Living in a Material World’ takes place at Sotheby's on 17 October 2017
