Housed in an old Victorian warehouse in what used to be an apothecary in London’s Shoreditch, Merchants Tavern is the result of a collaboration between chefs Angela Hartnett, Neil Borthwick and Canteen founders Dominic Lake and Patrick Clayton-Malone. An exercise in elegant understatement, the interiors are by Clayton-Malone’s studio Very Good & Proper, and feature bespoke furniture such as the MT Club chair, which can also be bought on their website. Determined by the seasons, Borthwick and Harnett have created a Modern European menu with dishes such as roast partridge with baked celeriac and hazelnut pesto or Hogget broth with pearl barley and ewe’s milk cheese toast. There’s Mandarin and cardamom burnt cream with almond shortbread for dessert and a selection of natural wines from established and emerging growers on offer, along with British beers and cocktails.
