Soho House — Mumbai, India
With the arrival of the Soho House group in Mumbai, India’s erstwhile party capital just gained itself a new hotspot.
Patriarch Nick Jones and Linda Boronkay of Soho House Design have converted a 10-storey building, built originally as apartments 15 years ago in the beachside Juhu neighbourhood, into a very grown-up playpen that Soho House groupies will recognise immediately.
The country manor vibe of a Millennial titled scion is very much in evidence especially in the 38-bedrooms with their deep armchairs, and textured sisal rugs and patterned wallpaper and familiar Cowshed toiletries, though Indian aesthetics are subtly incorporated by way of cane furniture, cement tiles, vibrant splashes of Rajasthani block printed fabrics, vintage mirrors, lampshades covered with antique sari fabrics, and local antiques and artwork by the likes of Subodh Gupta.
Once past the reception, Jones and his team conspire to keep you happily house-bound. On the ground floor are a public lounge and bar, alongside an outpost of Cecconi’s; a gym, steam rooms and juice bar on the first; screening room on the second; five floors of bedrooms; private members floor dressed with antique teak floors and cut-glass chandeliers; library on the 9th; and the 10th-floor rooftop that’s capped by the swimming pool, a Soho House staple.
