Something colourful is coming to 5 Carlos Place in Mayfair. It’s prismatic, punchy and emanates pizzazz, and celebrates the intersection of craftmanship between Italy and Colombia. Yes, artisanal aficionados. Marni Market is pitching up at Matchesfashion’s Central London townhouse. From 2 June 2021, the Italian label’s annual craft-celebrating offering of furnishing accessories, design objects and bags, will be displayed for the first time as a full collection in London, in all its optimistic glory.
Over the past year, the importance of time-honed, craft-focused creation has been reinforced, as around the world, we’ve appreciated a slower, more meditative approach to creativity and consumption. Marni Market’s one-off-designs are all crafted by the Milanese brand’s network of Colombian artisans, who the label has a long-term collaborative and celebratory relationship with. These intuitive designs revel in tone, texture and pattern, and make illusion to the bold beauty of the natural world, from hand-woven PVC chairs which unfurl like pastel-hued flowers, to wire sculptures resembling blooming cactuses, rugs with gently undulating patterns to crochet shopping bags with prismatic petal motifs.
In celebration of Matchesfashion’s Marni Market launch, the luxury retailer has commissioned London-based documentary and portraiture photographer Jermaine Francis to lens a series of pieces positioned around the UK capital. Cue a striped shopping bag suspended from a road sign in Soho, fruit stands positioned jauntily on bold park benches and a colour blocked stool standing in a red telephone box.
For lucky Wallpaper* readers, keen to inject some joy into their own domestic settings, be it through a side table to energise a living room setting or a rocking chair for a roof terrace, Matchesfashion is offering first access to Marni Market at 5 Carlos Place on 1 and 2 June 2021.
