For better or worse, the power of social media is a wondrous thing. Case in point: when the Los Angeles-based ceramic artist Bari Ziperstein saw the New York-dwelling fashion designer Rachel Comey’s creations for the S/S 2017 season, she was so captivated that she was inspired to create a collection of vessels featuring prints inspired by Comey’s textile designs.
The pair connected over Instagram (of course), and the resulting collection is comprised of 11 limited-edition pieces that are available in Comey’s recently opened Melrose Place boutique, as of this month.
‘I’ve always been a die-hard fan of Rachel’s aesthetic, but when I learned of her background in sculpture, I immediately knew she would identify with my take on the similarities between prints finding their way onto ceramics and the very fabric that forms the foundation of her clothing and swimwear this season,’ explains Ziperstein.
The geometric ceramic range is an elegant union of both designers’ aesthetics. Melded with Ziperstein’s art-inflected forms, Comey’s quirky prints and colour combinations can be appreciated on a new artistic level, separate from the clothes she’s so well loved for. Ziperstein’s works range from matte glazed pots and bowls, to angular vases that feature black cord handles embellished with gold-painted ceramic beads for added panache. Individualistic, eye-catching and displaying an artistic hand, the project distills just what the essence of creative collaboration should be.
