A year after the opening of its new Shigeru Ban-designed home (see W* 184), and a tripling in attendance numbers, the Aspen Art Museum is gearing up for an extra celebratory edition of its annual ArtCrush fundraising festival.
The sparkly centerpiece of the event is the ArtCrush Summer Benefit Gala and auction which this year will see New York-based artist Lorna Simpson presented with the Aspen Award for Art. But the fun-packed three-dayer – chaired by the former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader turned art-world power broker Amy Phelan – kicks off with WineCrush, hosted by Phelan and husband John at their art-filled Aspen home. ArtCrush auction items include works donated by artists such as Francesco Clemente, Roy McMakin, the Haas Brothers and Richard Phillips.
Phelan, who has serious fundraising acumen as well as a way with pom poms, is on various committees, councils and boards at the Guggenheim, MoMA and the Whitney. The Phelans split their time between Aspen and New York, and their support for the Aspen Art Museum ensures free admission to the public.
