NYC boutique boxing studio Shadowbox punches above the rest
Located in New York’s Flatiron district, Shadowbox is a stylish step up from the usual grittiness of traditional boxing gyms. Founder Daniel Glazer took a depth of knowledge honed from years spent on the old-school boxing turfs where he trained with professional fighters, dusted it off and implemented a fitness regime built on those foundations and spliced with sleek, inviting interiors.
‘We found that clients will form lines out the door if you distil the very best of boxing into a 45-minute workout incorporating rounds of heavy bag work, thumping curated music and a welcoming ambience,’ Glazer says.
The gloved craft now has a new home inside Glazer's refined Manhattan space, which merges a streamlined design aesthetic with original brick walls, ornate tin ceilings, and factory pendant lighting. Locker rooms boast contemporary fixtures and CO Bigelow toiletries. A front-of-house juice bar and cafe shows off Caesarstone countertops and the centerpiece – a vintage-inspired boxing ring – evokes the jab-hook-cross days of the 19th century with its manila roped boundaries and duck canvas floor.
In the dark, club-like studio with a state-of-the-art sound system, 40 luxe leather bags ensure a fitness experience completely unique to anything previously conceived.
All interiors and finishes were designed in-house and the luxury facility has been such a success that Glazer and his team is hard at work on a second location (set to open this year) in Brooklyn’s Dumbo neighbourhood.
