'A Passion for Jean Prouvé' exhibition, Turin

Glamorous yet rough around the edges, LA has always attracted the daring, including in architecture. From simple modernist homes to shape-shifting civic design, this history of risk is about to go on view in the city's main museums, under the Getty Foundation-funded umbrella 'Pacific Standard Time Presents: Modern Architecture in LA'. Here, we give you a sneak preview of its eleven exhibitions, including an ambitious Getty Foundation show focusing on vintage Ed Ruscha prints immortalising the beautiful banality of 1960s Los Angeles, from gas stations (pictured) and dingbat apartments, to every building on Sunset Strip.

A sneak preview of 11 exhibitions showcasing modern architecture in LA

The Carlos Monsiváis Personal Library may be housed in an historic 1807 building, but it demonstrates a novel way of organising books, and a suitably modern interior to match. Occupying a section of Mexico City’s old José Vasconcelos Library, it is part of a new literary venture called the City of Books showcasing the intellectual journey of five key Mexican thinkers (Ali Chumacero, Carlos Monsiváis, José Luis Martínez, Jaime García Terrés and Antonio Castro Leal) through their personal book collections. A team of five architects was appointed to work on the interior design and create a separate space for each of the literary collections. The Carlos Monsiváis Personal Library is the latest to be completed and is designed by JSa Arquitectura. It occupies a walnut-clad, double-height row of rooms on the west wing and aims to bring the public closer to the mind of the writer by arranging his books to showcase the development of his thinking. The City of Books at José Vasconcelos Library, Mexico City

As the latest European Capital of Culture, France's second largest city has its modern debut to the world this year - and in preparation it's done a spectacular amount of grooming.
